Have an expert give your home an energy checkup

Do you ever wonder how much energy you lose through leaky doors, windows and ductwork? Do you suspect that your insulation isn’t making the grade? What about your major appliances? Wouldn’t it be great if you could have an expert give your home an energy checkup - and do some of the work right then and there? You can.

In one easy visit, utility-certified technicians will evaluate your home’s energy performance and install energy-saving measures such as sealing air leaks and installing energy-efficient lighting, faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads. The technicians will also provide written recommendations for deeper energy-saving measures such as insulation, high-efficiency heating and cooling, water heating, windows and appliances. To help you in making smart energy choices, your recommendations will include information on rebates and financing along with payback and investment information specific to your home.

The fee* for all of this is just $99.

* Fee subject to change without notice and based on available funding.

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program

Thinking about deeper energy saving measures like insulation or a high-efficiency heating and cooling system? Are you planning a big home project? Check out our Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program. Connecticut is proud to partner with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to make this program available for our residents. It is a one-stop shopping for energy efficiency approach. Simply select one of our certified contractors to work with you. You will receive a custom proposal from that contractor to do all the work. You choose what you would like to do and submit an application to your utility to pre-authorize the incentives for the upgrades. When the work is completed, your utility inspects the upgrades and sends you an incentive check. It’s that simple. Learn more about this program.

Steps to Take to Smart Energy Action

Step 1 -

Submit an application* to your local utility, either online or by mail. For an application and full program details, click the link to your utility’s website below:

CL&P       UI     CNG     SCG    Yankee Gas

Step 2 -

A local utility-authorized contractor will contact you to schedule your service with their HES-certified technicians. (Note: Because of high demand for this program, there may be a waiting list. The program is subject to available funding.)

Step 3 -

You receive a home energy checkup and basic services. Watch the short video below to see what happens during a normal visit.

  • The home energy checkup begins with important safety tests on your furnace and water heater. Next, the technicians perform a blower-door test to pinpoint drafts and air leaks, then seal critical air leaks.

  • If you have forced hot air or central air conditioning, the technicians test your ductwork to assess airflow within the ductwork system and seal significant leaks.

  • Hot water-saving measures including low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators may be installed.

  • Energy-efficient light bulbs may be installed (subject to program caps).

  • The visit ends with a kitchen table wrap-up. The technicians review the work done in your home and tell you about deeper energy saving measures that can help you save even more energy and money. They will also go over financing options to help you make the energy efficiency upgrades. During this wrap-up, they will provide you with:

    • An easy-to-read Home Energy Solutions workbook, which shows what areas in your home were addressed during the visit, the results of the blower-door test, 101 easy ways to save energy and other information resources and forms specific to your home.

    • Payback and investment information for deeper energy saving measures, such as insulation, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, water heaters, ENERGY STAR-certified windows and appliances.

    • Information about rebates including:

      • Up to $500 for qualifying central air conditioning systems
      • Up to $100 towards the replacement of certain inefficient appliances with qualifying energy-efficient models
      • Up to $1,000 for qualifying natural gas furnaces
      • Incentives for qualifying insulation upgrades

Step 4 -

Now that you have your Home Energy Solutions workbook, it is up to you to take the next step toward saving more energy. Decide what you can do on your own and what you may need to hire a contractor for. The sooner you take action, the sooner you’ll see savings!

*Please note: this program is very popular, may have a waiting list and is subject to available funding.

The program is ideally suited for one- to four-family homes. If you live in a 5+-unit apartment building, our Multi-family Initiative may be better suited for you – and your neighbors.
