Rebate
Up to $500
  • Heating & Cooling
  • Rebates

If your heating and cooling system is more than ten years old or needs to be replaced, install an ENERGY STAR® -certified system to maximize energy savings.

Key Features

You want your home to be comfortable year-round, and now comfort and cost can be balanced with the selection of an energy-efficient heating and cooling system for your home.

Selecting the right system, and size of system, for your home has never been more important. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, heating and cooling account for up to 56 percent of energy used in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

Fortunately, now there are a wide variety of energy-efficient systems available to heat and cool your home. In addition, many heating and cooling systems have supporting equipment in common, such as thermostats and ducts, which provide opportunities for more energy savings. Finding the most energy-efficient system is easy – just look for the ENERGY STAR®.  An ENERGY STAR-certified central air conditioner is 15 percent more efficient than a standard system. Those savings can add up.

How We Can Help

We help make it affordable to upgrade your heating and cooling system with rebates of $200 - or even $500 per ton up to two systems per home. Rebates apply to qualifying ENERGY STAR central air conditioning or heat pump systems.

Energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment will save you energy and money.

Call 877-WISE-USE (877-947-3873) for more information.

Rebate applications for 2020 rebates are being accepted and processed for payment. Please submit your 2020 rebate within the prescribed timeframe on the rebate form. Please contact Eversource or United Illuminating at 877-WISE-USE with questions.

There are a few kinds of HVAC systems you could have installed in your home which are dependent on where you live, square footage, construction type and cost. Listed below are the two types available for the rebate.

  • A split HVAC system is comprised of multiple sections, an indoor coil section in the ductwork and an outdoor coil section (compressor/condenser) installed on the outside of the home. Inside the home (attic, basement, closet) there may be a combined fan and air conditioning coil in one box or separate coil and fan sections which can house a gas or oil heating furnace. Note that the installed system must be a matched assembly to qualify for rebate (the two or three components must be matched; more information can be found on the AHRI Directory). Most often, all sections would require replacement to ensure the best efficiency.

Call 877-WISE-USE (877-947-3873) for more information.

Step 1 - To see which heat pump and air conditioning systems qualify for an incentive, see the "Who is eligible for a rebate and qualifying systems" section below. See the rebate application for additional eligibility requirements, terms and conditions.

Install a qualifying natural gas furnace, natural gas boiler, or a boiler circulator pump to reduce your home’s heating costs and save even more with instant discounts.

Key Features

In most homes, heating is the single biggest energy expense. Replacing your old furnace, boiler or boiler circulator pump with new high-efficiency heating equipment can take a bite out of your energy costs, plus make your home more comfortable.

A furnace or boiler's efficiency is measured by annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) which tells you what percent of fuel is converted to useful heat for your home. The higher the AFUE, the more heat you get for your heating dollar. Older furnace and boiler systems have efficiencies in the range of 56 to 70 percent. High-efficiency heating systems achieve efficiencies as high as 97 percent, converting nearly all the fuel to useful heat for your home.

For more information on high efficiency systems please visit the U.S. Department of Energy website. The site also features an easy-to-use table showing what you could save when you upgrade to an energy-efficient system.

Before you invest in a new furnace, boiler, or boiler circulator pump make your home as energy efficient as possible. Improving insulation and sealing air leaks to stop heat loss may allow you to purchase a smaller, less expensive heating system. Home Energy Solutions can help you identify and make energy-saving improvements that are right for your home.

ENERGY STAR® Heat Pump Water Heater Rebate

Type
Home

Category

Instant Discount
Up to $750
  • Hot Water
  • Rebates

Twice as efficient as older electric water heaters, ENERGY STAR® certified heat pump water heaters with a 3.0 Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) or greater and 55 gallons or less of storage capacity qualify for instant discounts.

A $400 rebate is available for ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heaters with a 3.0 (UEF) or greater and more than 55 gallons of storage capacity.

Key Features

It’s not so hard to understand why heat pump water heaters are twice as efficient as electric water heaters. They simply move heat rather than make heat, just like a refrigerator, but in reverse. While a refrigerator pulls heat from inside a box and dumps it into the surrounding room, a heat pump water heater pulls heat from the surrounding air and transfers it – at a higher temperature – into the tank to heat your water. Because they use the warm ambient air temperature to do most of the work, it is very efficient.

As the heat pump removes heat from the surrounding ambient air, it also provides a slight cooling effect. The result is dehumidification and cooling. For this reason, heat pumps work well in basements. Because they rely on surrounding air, they require at least 750 cubic feet of space around the heat pump and should not be installed in a closet or other confined space.

We help make it affordable to upgrade to an ENERGY STAR-certified heat pump water heater with a $750 discount  for eligible models with a storage capacity of 55 gallons or less. A $400 mail-in rebate is available for heat pump water heater models with a storage capacity greater than 55 gallons.  Whether you’re replacing an old water heater or installing one in a new home, you'll save money up front.

For customers who meet certain income eligibility guidelines, even greater incentives may be available through the Home Energy Solutions – Income Eligible program.

ENERGY STAR is a widely recognized and trusted label on products that meet strict energy-efficiency requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. By using less energy, these products also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Learn more at the ENERGY STAR website.

Install a heat pump water heater today and save energy - and money!

  • One of the most energy-efficient water heating systems on the market today
  • 25 to 50 percent savings on electric water-heating costs
  • Programmable options such as “vacation mode” that save energy when you’re away and ensure you have hot water when you return
  • Dehumidify damp spaces such as a basement or unconditioned space

Consider the following factors:

  • For the most efficient operation, the heat pump water heater should be installed in a space where temperatures average at least 50 degrees
  • Because it exhausts cool air, the water heater should not be installed in a heated living area
  • A heat pump water heater should be installed with at least 750 cubic feet of space around it

There are two ways to receive the discount on qualifying heat pump water heater units:

Work with an installer

When your installing contractor purchases a qualifying unit at a participating distributor in Connecticut, a $750 instant discount will be automatically applied to the eligible equipment cost. A $400 rebate will be automatically applied for eligible models with more than 55 gallons of storage capacity.

Geothermal Heat Pump Rebates

Up to $1,500
  • Heating & Cooling
  • New Construction or Major Renovation

  • Renewable Energy

Efficient and environmentally friendly, geothermal heat pumps use the stable, even temperature of the earth to heat and cool your home.

Key Features

A geothermal heat pump takes advantage of the earth’s constant temperature to provide highly efficient heating and cooling. In the winter, fluid circulating in underground pipes carries the earth’s heat to your home, where it is concentrated to provide heating. In the summer, the process is reversed and heat from your home is carried back to the earth through the pipes to provide cooling.

A few feet below the earth’s surface, the ground temperature remains fairly stable through the year, ranging from 45 degrees in the North to 70 degrees in the South. Ground temperatures, like those in a cave, are warmer than the air above in the winter and cooler than the air in the summer. A geothermal heat pump taps these conditions, carrying energy through a series of fluid-filled copper or plastic pipes installed underground. This allows the geothermal heat pump to provide space heating and cooling. Some systems can also heat water.

According to studies, ENERGY STAR®-certified geothermal heat pumps can reduce energy costs by 20 to 70 percent. Approximately 70 percent of the energy used in a geothermal heat pump system is renewable energy from the ground. The systems use a small amount of electricity to operate the heat pump, ground loop pump and distribution fan or pump.

A geothermal heat pump is a reliable, low-maintenance and environmentally friendly heating and cooling choice. It operates safely and quietly, with no combustion, direct emissions or exposed outdoor equipment, such as a fuel tank.   Because it is mechanically simple and all exterior equipment is below ground, protected from the weather, maintenance costs are often lower than other heating and cooling systems.

Need to add heat to an addition? Turning a three-season room into a year-round room? Try an ultra-efficient and quiet ductless split heat pump for your heating and cooling needs.

Key Features

A ductless heat pump, also known as a mini-split heat pump, is a highly efficient heating and cooling system that can operate at a fraction of the cost of baseboards and wall heaters. Their superior air distribution helps make living spaces more comfortable, and they are great for homes with open floor plans.

Ductless heat pumps are very effective for electrically heated homes or areas where ductwork does not exist or cannot be installed. They are easy to install as a new primary heat source, making them a good choice for home remodel projects, additions and new construction.

Studies have shown that ductless heat pumps can reduce heating and cooling costs 25 to 50 percent. Systems are competitively priced and available from many well-known manufacturers. Because they are easy to install, installation costs are low compared to other heating and cooling methods.

How We Help

We make it affordable to install a ductless heat pump with instant discounts for qualifying units of  $500 per ton up to two systems per home. Equipment should be installed by a licensed contractor that is certified by the manufacturer of the product being installed.

Call 877-WISE-USE (877-947-3873) for more information.

During heating season, ductless heat pumps draw heat from outside air and move it inside. Because they tap into existing heat in the air, they use less electricity to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. In the summer, they extract heat from the air inside your home and move it outside to provide cooling.

Ductless heat pumps have three main parts:

  1. An indoor unit that mounts on the wall or ceiling
  2. An outdoor unit that typically sits on the ground
  3. A remote control that operates the inside unit

The indoor and outdoor units are connected by small refrigerant lines, which are installed through a very small hole in the wall. The indoor unit circulates the heated or cooled air into the room. The units are smaller than conventional air conditioning equipment and less intrusive. Because expensive and invasive ductwork isn’t necessary, installation is easy, inexpensive and less disruptive.

A cool way to stay warm!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

What is a ductless heat pump?

A.

A ductless heat pump is a highly efficient zonal heating and cooling system that does not require ductwork. The system includes an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air-handling units, called “heads,” which are linked by a refrigerant line. Indoor heads are typically mounted high on a wall or ceiling covering a three-inch hole where the refrigerant line passes through to the outside unit that is mounted at the base of the house. Each indoor head corresponds with a heating and cooling zone that can be controlled independently.

Q.

Do I still need my old heaters?

A.

While a ductless system can be used as a primary heat source, most homeowners are encouraged to keep their existing electric heating units to supplement the DHP system in extreme weather conditions or in hard to reach extremities of the home.

Q.

How does a ductless heat pump work?

A.

Ductless heat pumps are reversible, two-way heat pumps that use electricity to transfer heat between outdoor and indoor air by compressing and expanding a refrigerant. Using a refrigerant vapor compression cycle, like a common household refrigerator, ductless heat pumps collect heat from outside the house and deliver it inside on the heating cycle, and vice versa on the cooling cycle.
Ductless heat pumps use variable speed compressors with “inverter technology” (AC to DC) to continuously match the heating/cooling load. This prevents the on/off cycling of conventional electric resistance and central heating systems, which are often associated with uncomfortable temperature variations and high energy consumption.

Ductless systems consist of three main parts:
1.An outdoor unit that contains a condensing coil, an inverter-driven variable speed compressor, an expansion valve and a fan to cool the condenser coil.
2.An indoor unit that contains an evaporator and a quiet oscillating fan to distribute air into the space.
3. A refrigerant line set made of insulated copper tubing, which is housed in a conduit alongside a power cable, and a condensation drain.

Systems also include a remote control to set the desired temperature and program nighttime settings.

Q.

How is the system controlled?

A.

The system is controlled with a remote control, which also functions as a programmable thermostat. Most systems offer various modes of operation such as quiet, high or timer. Wall-mounted controls are also available.

Q.

What are appropriate applications for a ductless heat pump?

A.

Replacing an existing zonal heating system – Ductless heat pumps can replace or supplement existing electric baseboard, wall or ceiling units, wood stoves and other space heaters (such as propane or kerosene). A cost-effective electric heat conversion in a small house might consist of a single system serving the main area of the house, with existing electric baseboards left in place in bedrooms and bathrooms.
Room additions – A ductless heat pump can be a good choice when a room is added to a house or an attic is converted to living space. It can provide efficient heating and cooling without having to extend existing ductwork or pipes or install electric resistance heaters.
New construction – New homes can be designed or adapted to take advantage of the characteristics of ductless heat pumps. Typically one or more systems are installed in various “zones” of a house to simplify installation and minimize refrigerant line length.

Q.

Are ductless heat pumps efficient?

A.

Yes! Ductless heat pumps can operate using 25 to 50 percent less energy than electric resistance and forced air systems.
Three key factors account for their high efficiency:

1.Ductless heat pumps allow the user to control each heating/cooling zone independently, eliminating the costly over-heating and cooling common to central air systems. Why pay to heat or cool rooms that are not currently occupied? While central air systems lose as much as 30 percent efficiency through air leaks and conduction in the ductwork, ductless heat pumps distributing air directly into each zone.

2.Inverter-driven variable speed compressors allow ductless heat pump systems to maintain constant indoor temperatures by running continuously at higher or lower speeds. The system can ramp up or down without great losses in operating efficiency, avoiding the energy-intensive on/off cycling common in electric resistance and forced-air systems.

3.Modern ductless heat pumps have ultra-high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratios (SEER) between 16 and 26 and Heating Seasonal Performance Factors (HSPF) between 8.5 and 12.

Q.

How long have ductless heat pumps been used?

A.

Ductless heat pumps were developed in Japan in the 1970s and have since become a preferred heating and cooling system in Asia and much of Europe. In the United States, ductless heat pumps have been used commercially for over 20 years.

Q.

How much does a ductless heat pump cost?

A.

The average cost of an installed ductless heat pump with one indoor heating/cooling zone is $3,000 to $5,000. Additional heating zones and greater heating capacities increase the cost of the system. Other factors that will affect the cost of an installed system include the manufacturer and model, refrigerant line set length, installation difficulty and contractor rates.

Q.

What incentives are available for ductless heat pumps?

A.

You may qualify for an instant discount of up to $500 per home, provided by the Energy Efficiency Fund.

Q.

How long will a ductless heat pump system last?

A.

With proper maintenance and care, a ductless heat pump should perform for more than 20 years. Many systems installed in the 1980s are still functioning today.

Q.

What kind of maintenance does a ductless heat pump require?

A.

Ductless heat pumps require some basic maintenance to ensure optimum performance. In most cases, keeping the filters and coils clean is the only maintenance needed. It’s a simple task most homeowners can do themselves.

Q.

How do I know what size of system my house needs?

A.

Ductless heat pump systems are sized to meet the heating and cooling needs of individual zones in the home. There is a great deal of flexibility when it comes to system sizing. One indoor unit can provide between 9,000 Btu and 30,000 Btu depending on its capacity rating. Common indoor unit capacities are 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, 24,000 and 30,000 Btu. Outdoor units are sized to meet the combined load of all heating/cooling zones. Multi-zone systems may require more than one outdoor unit.

Rebate
Up to $1,150
  • Heating & Cooling
  • New Construction or Major Renovation

A smart way for businesses to save gas and cut energy costs is by installing high-efficiency natural gas heating and water heating equipment. With efficiencies of up to 98 percent, they are the most efficient heating equipment available.

Key Features

Make a smart choice you can warm up to. Install a low-intensity natural gas infrared heater.

Natural gas infrared heaters are mounted overhead to emit quiet radiant energy down to the people, objects and floor at the working level of the building. This translates to warm, comfortable conditions at the people zone and less wasted energy. Infrared heaters are particularly well-suited for situations where all of the air in a space does not need to be warmed or would be inefficient to warm. Large structures such as warehouses, loading docks, fire stations and aircraft hangars are ideal candidates for natural gas infrared heaters.

With efficiencies of up to 85 percent or more, installing high-efficiency natural gas water heating equipment is a smart way for businesses to save gas and cut energy costs. Rebates let you enjoy the energy-saving benefits without paying a premium price.

When it comes to high-efficiency natural gas water heating equipment, you have two great choices. A high-efficiency domestic storage unit provides better insulation, heat traps and more efficient burners than traditional models. An on-demand (tankless) domestic water heater provides hot water when you need it without the use of a storage tank. Both are capable of reaching thermal efficiencies of 85 percent or more.

With an on-demand, or tankless water heater, the gas burner is activated by the flow of water whenever a hot water faucet is turned on. The water heater delivers a constant supply of hot water until the faucet is turned off. No water is stored, so standby heat losses are low. These water heaters can be installed centrally or at the point of use.

The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund allows you to install high-performance gas heating and water heating equipment without paying a premium price. Rebates for qualifying equipment make it affordable to save energy and improve comfort and performance. Whether you’re replacing old equipment or installing it in new construction, you'll save money.
