Information & Tips

It’s not hard to understand why heat pump water heaters are twice as efficient as electric water heaters. They move heat rather than making it, just like a refrigerator, but in reverse. And because they use the warm ambient air temperature to do most of the work, they’re very efficient.

Heat pump water heaters come in different shapes and styles. Some models are called “hybrid” water heaters because they can switch modes to operate like a standard electric model when needed—like a hybrid car switching modes for a quick boost of power. This flexibility allows hybrid water heaters to balance efficiency and performance.

Heat pump water heaters make the same amount of hot water using 70% less electricity. They use 1/3 the electricity and at 1/3 the cost than conventional electric water heaters which conserves resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

On an annual basis, an ENERGY STAR commercial electric heat pump water heater would be expected to save at least 10 MWh with an emissions savings equivalent to removing 1.5 cars from the road per year.

Heat pump water heaters are also known as “hybrid water heaters” because, during periods of high demand, they switch to standard electric resistance heat—like hybrid car switching modes. This flexibility allows heat pump water heaters to balance efficiency and performance. (Source: ENERGY STAR®)

Heat pump water heaters let you select from different operating modes including Efficiency (only using the heat pump to heat water), Auto (the default setting), Electric (just using electricity to heat water), and Vacation (not available on all models, but lets you save energy by putting the unit in “sleep” mode while you’re gone). Heat pump water heaters are unique compared to other water heaters in that their performance and efficiency are dependent on the conditions in which they operate. How Heat Pump Water Heaters Work

Heat pump water heaters pull heat from the surrounding air and transfer it—at a higher temperature—into the tank to heat your water. As they remove heat from the surrounding ambient air, they also provide dehumidification and cooling. For this reason, they work well in basements, but because they rely on the surrounding air, they require at least 750 cubic feet of space around them and shouldn’t be installed in confined spaces.
